{Author interview + Giveaway}: A MATTER OF TRUTH by Heather Lyons

A MATTER OF TRUTH Synopsis:

Not long ago, Chloe Lilywhite seemingly had it all: a prized spot on the Magicals’ Council as lead Creator, a loving fiancé and Connection, and a wealth of good friends. But the poised young woman she projected was nothing more than a façade. Her parents all but disowned her. Power plays and accusations of murder within the Council rocked her confidence. And most difficult of all, her secret, a secondary Connection to Jonah’s twin brother, Kellan, became painfully impossible to resist. Desperate to gain control over her rapidly unraveling existence, Chloe did the unthinkable: she ran away.

Now living and working in Alaska under an alias, Chloe is slowly discovering who she is and, more importantly, who she wants to be. But the more she tries to leave the Magical world behind, the harder it becomes to stay hidden. The Elders are back with a vengeance, and the stakes have never been higher. Chloe finally has to make a choice: embrace her pre-ordained Fate or pave her own way in the worlds. One thing’s for sure, though—she’s finally up for the challenge.

Author Interview

Today I have for you a really awesome interview with Heather! We talk book covers, advise on her to go about publishing, and other things she's working on. Without further adieu lest's get started :)

*ME* Let me just say that I love these covers! Did you have any kind of input on any of them?

*Heather* Thank you! I really love them, too. Yes, I did have some input—the designer I worked with, the very talented Carly Stevens (www.carlystevens.com), and I would talk about our visions for what the cover represented, but ultimately, she crafted how they look, along with hand drawn titles. What I love is the subtle symbolism towards the books’ themes she sticks into them, like the clouds, textures, and colors.

**Interesting. This one, by the way, is my favorite cover out of the series ;)**

*ME* Tell us one thing that your readers would be surprised to know?

*Heather* About me or the books? What the heck, I’ll do both. Hmm . . . Okay, for me, readers may not know that I play the piano and have written a bunch of songs, including one that was recorded. As for the books . . . let’s see. Initially, Lizzie and Graham had a much larger arc throughout the series and were important secondary characters, but they’re story got trimmed down substantially. Maybe someday, I’ll share some of their deleted scenes!

**Oh how I wish I could play piano (sigh).**
**I hope that someday is very soon. I want more Lizzie and Graham!**

*ME* Throughout your journey as an author, have you made any author friends?

*Heather* Yes! The writing community is a wonderful, supportive thing, filled with lovely people.

*ME* Do you read any NA books? What are some of your all time favorite NA authors?

*Heather* I admit I read a lot of NA. A few standouts for me are Wait For You by Jennifer Armontrout (wait—J. Lynn) and The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorenson.

**I loved Wait for you too! Both Jennifer and Jessica are some of my favorite authors! We were meant to be friends :D**

*ME* What can you tell those want to publish a book and how to go about doing it?

*Heather* Well, the big thing is to write—write constantly. Write as often as you can. Focus on building sentences that speak to you, and ones that speak to others. Don’t just throw words at paper and hope they stick. Keep writing. Read a lot of books, especially ones in the genres you write in. Join a writing group and/or get some critique partners. Edit and revise your work. Read some more. Hire an excellent editor you can build a rapport with. Research the best ways to target your story toward readers. Keep writing. Keep reading. Build relationships within the writing community. Do not press publish until you’ve taken the time to make your story the best it can be. And then—keep writing.

**Note to self: KEEP WRITING**

*ME* While writing the Fate series, do you map out what's going to happen ahead of time?

*Heather* I actually wrote the first drafts of all the books at one fell swoop several years ago, so I know where it’s going and what’s going to happen. Granted, I threw out the entire third book and rewrote from the ground up (and that’s happening a lot with the fourth book, too), but I have the general idea of where I want to go.

That said, I’m horrible at storyboarding. I envy people who can do that, who take excellent notes and construct a map and work steadily toward fulfilling that vision. I’m more of a fly-by-the-seat of my pants kind of writer. I let my characters lead me where they want to go, even though they’ll end up where I want them.

*ME* Would you say that you believe in fate?

*Heather* Idealistically, I’d love to say yes. But I really, truly believe that life is what we make of it.

*ME* Other than the Fate series, are you working on anything new and can we get a teaser?

*Heather* Well, my agent has one of my stand-alone books right now, and I wish I could share that with you, because I adore that book to pieces. It’s a romance based on Greek mythology, and features some of my very favorite characters. As for other stories, I’ll be picking another non-Fate book to work on shortly.

***Can't blame a girl for trying ;)**

There are always two sides to every story . . .

His whole life, Jonah Whitecomb has strove to meet everyone’s expectations of him: the perfect student, dutiful son, loyal twin, accomplished surfer, and powerful Magical. Author Interview

Heather was kind enough to answers some questions about the series and other exciting things, so without further adieu...

*Gaby* For those who haven't read the Fate series, can you tell us what it's about?

*Heather* Unbeknownst to people, a secret race of people called Magicals influence the courses and events of civilizations on seven planes of existence. One of the most powerful of these Magicals is a seventeen-year-old Creator named Chloe Lilywhite. Chloe struggles with the weight of expectations on her shoulders and how her future has been planned out for her. One day, a boy she’s dreamed about most of her life and fell in love with at a young age appears in her math class; with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn toward. So not only is Chloe dealing with who she is and what’s expected of her, but she’s got her hands full with these two guys.

**I do love me some Paranormal ;)**

*Gaby* How did you come up with the names of your characters?

*Heather* This is going to sound kind of funny, but a lot of the names are ones that I’ve always liked and considered as kid names. For example, had I ever had a daughter, I planned on naming her Chloe. As for surnames, I researched all of the Human Magicals names (which are color based), as well as the other races’ names (for example, Elves all have plant based surnames).

**NEAT!**

*Gaby* When did you finally decide to start writing?

*Heather* I’ve been writing stories and poems since I was in early elementary school and always fancied myself as wanting to be an author. But, when push came to shove, I went into first archaeology and then teaching before I came back to my first love. I figured life was too short to not go after what makes me happy!

**Now that's a great attitude to have!**

*Gaby* Can you tell us how you were feeling when you first book was finally published?

*Heather* A pretty good mix of terrified and excited—I was thrilled to finally achieve a lifelong dream, but terrified that nobody was ever going to read it but my close friends! haha!

**I'd be terrified as well, but it turn out great in the end :D**

*Gaby* I know I have problem sometimes saying what I want to say; how do you go about explaining what you want to say while writing?

*Heather* For dialogue, I “listen” to what the characters have to say when I’m doing mundane things such as driving or cleaning. I do the same with how I want scenes to play out. Once I feel like I have a good grip on what’s going on, I write it out. Inevitably, though, I’m pretty picky when it comes to writing out thoughts and sentences; I make sure word choices and placements are exactly as I like them. It’s not just a free-for-all (at least on the second go-through, anyway!).

**This is really great advice for those who have the same problem I have and aspiring writers!**

*Gaby* Who are some of your favorite YA authors?

*Heather* I’ve really enjoyed Stephanie Perkins, Sarah Rees Brennan, John Green, Kristin Cashore, and Cynthia Hand lately.

**I think we all love us some Stephanie Perkins! Oh and John Greene (Heck yeah!)**

It was such an honor interviewing you, Heather! This really means a lot to me because you are the very first author I got to interview! How did I do?

BOOK BLITZ: Going Thru Hell

Title: Going Thru Hell
Author: T.J. Loveless
Publication date: October 1st 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, New Adult

Synopsis:

KYLIE RIPPONS is a SpongeBob pajama bottom wearing, Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 driving, USDA certified klutz, coffee-addicted mortal, seeking a normal life despite the constant harassment of gods and the ability to braid time.

Kylie sees actions and consequences as bright, shining timelines in her head. Born with the power to gather the strings and braid them into a new chain of events, she is the weapon of choice for many pantheons in their never ending wars. But using the ability requires fuel, and for a mortal, it means a piece of her soul.

One Mesopotamian goddess, the only forsaken Valkyrie, and a rogue, immortal, Berserker ally with Kylie. Constant harassment forces the group to take drastic action, and go on the offensive. She must braid time to save friends, and herself, as the gods drive them into situations in which she must choose: braid time, save her friends, and lose pieces of her mortal soul, or become slave to the pantheon of her choice.

Deception by an old friend sends Kylie fleeing to her parents’ home, where she hid her son, Riot. She’s too late, the gods found Riot and hold him hostage. Searching for him, Kylie experiences the most devastating betrayal of all.

Kylie faces her worst nightmare: kill a friend and permanently hide Riot, leaving him motherless, or become a slave in exchange for his safety, leaving her soulless and insane.

If only the gods allowed for personal choice.

Excerpt

The headache started, pounding to the rhythm of my heartbeat. I silently begged to faint, but the power demands payment. There is no credit card or forgiveness for changing the strings of time. It doesn't care I only braided a mere twenty minutes. The ledger must always remain in the black.
“Hey, good looking,” a masculine voice called.
Bloody hell. I glanced around, hoping someone else pulled up and captured the guy's attention. No such luck. The truck and Ferrari remained the only two cars at the pumps. I cursed silently while ignoring him. The earthy smell surrounded me, filled with green things, sun and a summer's breeze.
                “Do you ignore everyone?”
I jumped. I turned to find a tall, muscular, handsome male. Long brown hair streaked with various shades of silver, and a well-trimmed gray beard carted streaks of brunette, giving the impression of a mature man. He wore a black, faded AC/DC t-shirt, shabby blue jeans and black boots. His ice blue eyes caught my attention and held it.

The last one disappeared, leaving Aki to stand in the middle, turning slowly, the image of a grizzly bear superimposed over his form. He fell forward, hands out to catch himself. Blood splashed upwards in a graceful and grotesque arc, covering his upper body and face. He sat on his feet, sword laid carefully over his thighs, chin resting on the massive chest.
“Do not mock me,” his voice low and tight.
“Mocking you? Me? Nooo. I genuinely disdain you and all you stand for.” The threads vibrated, the need to braid becoming almost impossible to resist. The secondary ability rushed to the surface of my skin.
Come on, you big bastard, touch me, I thought.
“Do not doubt that I will hurt you for such disrespect!” Spittle landed on my cheek.
“Can't disrespect what I never respected in the first place. Thought you guys were supposed to have a superior intellect.” My palms began to melt the plastic ties.
Come on, come on, before I lose control.
His hand wrapped around my throat and squeezed. My wrists popped apart and I grabbed his forearm, the power sliding over him as the heat from my palms burned his skin. He jerked, but it was too late.

Author Interview:

Tell us a little bit about Going Thru Hell

Going Thru Hell explores parenthood, and the family we create. What would we do? Would we kill? Die? Lip service is one thing, having to actually make the decisions another. I constantly heard, while writing the book and sending pieces to beta readers, “I’d die in an instant for my child.” So would I. But you can bet your sweet bippy I’ll try to find a way for everyone to survive first, I want to watch my kids grow up, explore their world, I want to be there for their triumphs and failures. If the only way for them to survive was my death, take me now. And that is the constant question the MC, Kylie, asks herself.

Where did you get the idea for Going Thru Hell?

As with a lot of the books over the past two years, the spark for the idea came from Wild Horse Loop outside of Rock Springs, WY. We’d head up there, and watch the bands of mustangs for hours. One incident involved an older stallion and a lead mare with her new foal. The band’s stallion died a few days earlier, and the new one was sniffing around. A stallion sometimes kills the very young foals, and the lead mare fought the stallion. She was bleeding, limping, breathing heavy, but not once did she allow that stallion near her foal. Three days later, they found the stallion dead from the wounds, and a new, younger stallion in charge of the band. The foal survived. The lead mare never stopped limping.

What type of research did you have to do for GTH?

Tons of research! Oh my gosh! I had to call a cousin in Hawaii, he’s an astrophysicist, to learn more about the fourth dimension, and if it was feasible. I also contacted an old professor to talk genetics, and then spent months looking for a dragon goddess, and the real mythology of several forgotten gods. My Google history would have likely landed me in the looney bin LOL

What genre is GTH?

Adult Contemporary Fantasy. It was really the only way it would work.

Why did you choose that genre?

I write mostly in the Spec Fic genre, although I have a dark Contemporary Fiction I’m working on. I love playing with mythology, using the old stories, not what is taught today. It’s fun to come up with a new twist to old ideas.

What actors would play the characters in your novel?

Oh! This one is easy! Kylie played by Genevieve Padalecki, Aki played by Anson Mount (so yummy!), Alicia Coppola is definitely Anahita, and I always see Brunhilde played by Emma Stone.

If Going Thru Hell had a theme song, what would it be?

My friend, Joey Francisco, handed over the Kylie’s song: Immortal by Eve and Adam. It is the perfect fit, and of course, now I have every album LOL

How long did it take your to write your novel?

When Kylie took over my imagination, it didn’t take long to get the rough draft out – approximately two weeks to write 66k words. I already knew the story, it was just a matter of typing it.

What is your favorite type of scene to write?

Definitely the action scenes. I used to be a Correctional Officer at a Men’s Maximum Security Unit, and it’s easy to write violence when you had to live through it.

If you could meet one author, dead or alive, who would it be?

Margaret Mitchell. I’ve gone through seven paperback, and one hardback, copies of Gone With The Wind, three VCR tapes (now I’m just dating myself), and two DVDs. She wrote Scarlett, and the entire cast, with such realism. They were flawed, making bad decisions, trusting at the wrong times, trying to survive a horrific moment in American history. She didn’t flinch showing they were human, with all the foibles and strengths inherent in all of us.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve been dabbling for years. But early in 2012 we moved to Wyoming, and the opportunity presented itself to really dig into learning to write properly. I took that opportunity and ran with it.

How can readers follow you and learn more about your works?
